It all started with making climbing gear for himself and his friends, and the high demand made Yvon Chouinard expand. Soon, other hardware, such as crampons, complemented his range, and some friends started working for him. By 1970, Chouinard Equipment had become the largest manufacturer of mountaineering equipment in the USA. But as climbing grew in popularity, its first effects on the environment became apparent, and Chouinard noticed that climbing was leaving its mark.
During a 1968 road trip to Patagonia, Chouinard and his buddies realised that different clothing was also needed for expeditions. Now, in addition to experience, the trip also provided inspiration for the name of the clothing company: Patagonia was born.
"We are in business to save our home planet".
All life on Earth is threatened with extinction. Patagonia has always aimed to use all its resources to do something about it: "Our business, our investments, our voice and our imagination."
At Patagonia, there was a lot of tinkering and successful experimentation with materials from the beginning. But quickly, Chouinard and his staff realised the extent of environmental degradation and global warming and that, as a textile company, they had a stake in it. They started thinking about how to do business differently - do the right thing and make money simultaneously. They wanted to be a role model for their customers and other companies, to inspire them to change the system. So, Patagonia started using materials that would bring relief to the environment and save the planet. They also donated 1% of sales each year (about $100 million) to help fight the environmental crisis. Patagonia used their own funds to protect the earth's natural resources.
Sustainability in all sectors: Recyclable functional clothing for outdoor activities & lifestyle.
All Patagonia products have one thing in common: they are recyclable. Nevertheless, Patagonia propagates to pass on the products accordingly until they have really reached the end of their product life. In this way, consumer behaviour already contributes to environmental protection. Patagonia is and remains one of the pioneers of innovation and functionality in the product sector. Many of the products we take for granted today result from the company running its own laboratories for decades. The concept means sustainability in all areas: ecology, economy and social aspects, which must also be implemented in the production countries. Fair wages, good working conditions, controlled on-site, and participation in the Fair Labor Association, for example, are very important cornerstones.
In addition to environmental compatibility, the fabrics are also tested for the high demands of top-class athletes. Patagonia works closely with sponsored athletes the Ambassadors, on product development. Mountaineering, climbing, skiing, running and other sports: the athletes' experience is passed on to Patagonia's design and development departments so that in the end, the requirements are also met in practice.
50 years of responsible business
"It's been almost 50 years since we started our experiment in responsible business, and we are only at the beginning." (Yvon Chouinard)
Patagonia looks back on 50 years of corporate history and responsible business while looking ahead to a future for the company and the planet. In 2022, Patagonia's path to the future was decisively paved as founder Yvon Chouinard donated the company to the planet. This means that from now on, all the company's profits will go to the non-profit organisation Patagonia Purpose Trust and the newly founded organisation Holdfast Collective. So, from now on, the earth is Patagonia's only shareholder. The company can thus donate even more money to NGOs and organisations working to combat the climate crisis, in addition to 1% for the Planet. That's roughly the equivalent of an extra $100 million per year - another significant step in Patagonia's mission to save our home planet. Learn more here.
Yvon Chouinard says, "If we have even the slightest hope of a livable planet - let alone a prosperous one - in the next 50 years, we must do all we can with the resources at our disposal. The Patagonia Purpose Trust and the Holdfast Collective are a new way to contribute and grow."
